Chassing Squirrels – When Maya sees a squirrel her instincts are stimulated and she wants to run and chase them. Although it is innocent play, it reminds me of her wild instincts and how deep they are in all of us.

Maya chases squirrels
till they run up a tree.
Squawking their deferrals
for everyone to see.
Ready – set – go
legs quick running in place.
And then don’t-cha know
she just releases the brakes.
And right out of the gate
I can see it in her face.
Her legs all a whirl
with a sweet and gentle grace.
She’s nimble and she’s fast
but not quick enough.
Swiftly tries to outlast
But those squirrels sure are tough.
They scamper up a tree
with Maya on their heels.
Laughing all the way with glee
they seem to know how Maya feels.
Up out on the branch they loom,
safe and away from everyone.
Schooling Maya in life’s classroom,
dropping nuts on her head just for fun.
So alert and present,
hair standing on end.
Although its just a game,
I’m glad that Maya is my friend. Please click for poem
